Penang's Timeless Elegance, 2018,
cyanotype on cotton paper,
17cm×17cm each
This artwork is a celebration of the intricate details found in Penang's heritage shophouses, an architectural treasure that reflects the island's rich cultural tapestry. By focusing on the delicate interplay of patterns, I aim to draw attention to the often-overlooked elements that make these structures so unique. The craftsmanship in these patterns tells a story of the past, of the artisans who meticulously created them and of the cultural influences that have shaped Penang over the centuries.
Using the cyanotype process adds an additional layer of meaning to the work. The deep blue hues of cyanotype evoke a sense of nostalgia—transporting viewers to a time when these shophouses were in their prime. This medium not only enhances the visual impact but also connects the work to the history and tradition of photography itself. The choice of cyanotype is deliberate—it’s a process that carries with it the weight of time, much like the shophouses I’m depicting. The unique aesthetic of this process brings out the intricate patterns in a way that feels both timeless and authentic.
In creating this work, I’m not just capturing the physical details of the shophouses but I’m also preserving the cultural narratives they represent. Each pattern, each design element is a proof to the diverse influences that have come together to form Penang’s identity. The shophouses are more than just buildings—they are vessels of history, carrying with them the stories of the people who lived, worked and thrived within their walls. By highlighting these patterns I hope to remind viewers of the importance of preserving these architectural gems not just as relics of the past but as living symbols of our cultural heritage.
