My artwork, Enchanted Rumah Melayu, incorporates photographs that capture the essence of Malay houses I discovered during my visit to the Terengganu State Museum in Terengganu. Each photograph intricately depicts the unique characteristics of these houses while paying homage to their cultural significance and local adaptations. The traditional Malay house stands as a treasured component of Malaysia's cultural heritage - shaped by societal demands and serving as a profound reflection of beliefs, morality and ideology rooted in cultural legacy. It symbolizes the remarkable skills and aesthetics passed down through generations of traditional craftsmen and builders.

Inspired by the traditional Malay singgora roof tiles, I shaped the work to mirror the actual size and form of these clay-made tiles, which are meticulously molded using the artisan's legs. This subtle yet significant detail emphasizes the authenticity and connection to our architectural heritage highlighting the craftsmanship and ingenuity of the past. However, as time passes these traditional Malay houses face the imminent threat of disappearance with the construction of new ones becoming increasingly rare.

Another detail I love is the texture and weathering of the houses captured in the photographs. Each house tells a story through its worn wood, intricate carvings and the way light falls on the aged surfaces. These elements convey a sense of history and the passage of time, reflecting the resilience and beauty of these structures despite the challenges they face.

I also appreciate the interplay between light and shadow in the photographs. It highlights the intricate designs and craftsmanship of the houses, bringing out the delicate balance between form and function that defines traditional Malay architecture. These details not only capture the aesthetic beauty of the houses but also speak to the cultural significance and the deep-rooted values they represent.

The cyanotype, with its deep blue tones adds a timeless and almost ethereal quality to the work. It allows me to enhance the connection between the architectural heritage of these Malay houses and the traditional craftsmanship they embody. The cyanotype process also adds a layer of texture and depth to the images, creating a visual dialogue between the past and present. By using this method, I’m able to emphasize the historical significance of these buildings while also bringing a contemporary touch to the work. This techniques reflects the ongoing relevance of these structures and the cultural legacy they represent even as they face the challenges of modernity and time.
